Early action deferral at UMD?

I’m considering applying early action to UMD and heard they sometimes defer applications. Can anyone explain how often this happens and what it means for my chances?

Deferrals in the early admissions process do happen, and the University of Maryland is no exception. Getting deferred means that while you're not admitted outright during the early action period, the admissions committee found your application strong enough to be reconsidered in the regular decision pool. Essentially, your application gets a "second look."

The rate of deferrals can vary by year and depends on the strength of the applicant pool, which isn't typically public information. However, if you're deferred, it’s important not to lose heart - you still have a chance of receiving an acceptance letter during the regular decision period.

In terms of what it means for your chances, being deferred doesn't necessarily lower your odds of admission. Once deferred, your application will be reviewed alongside the regular decision applications, and you'll get a new decision in the spring. It's a good idea to take this extra time to strengthen your application in any area you can. This could include updating your application with new accomplishments or sending an additional letter of recommendation, if UMD allows it.

It's also worth noting that a deferral isn't a reflection of your capabilities as a student or prospective candidate for other colleges. Admission rates vary by university and so do their priorities, meaning just because one institution decided to defer you doesn't mean another will make the same decision. Don't let your morale decrease, but rather use it as motivation to continue reaching your goals.
