UMD Early Action vs Regular Decision Advice

I’m considering applying to UMD and trying to figure out if I should go for early action or regular decision. What are the advantages or disadvantages of each? Any advice is appreciated!

The decision between Early Action (EA) and Regular Decision (RD) can have several implications, so let's break them down:

1. Reduced Stress: Early Action means you'll submit your application earlier (typically in November) and hear back sooner (usually by late December or early January). This can significantly lower your stress levels and allows for ample time to plan next steps if you're accepted.

2. Demonstrated Interest: Applying EA can signal to the school that you have a strong interest in attending.

3. Acceptance Rates: Some colleges have higher acceptance rates for EA than RD. While the University of Maryland doesn't publish their EA acceptance rate, it's worth noting that statistically, 'applying early' often gives a small boost to your chances of acceptance.

However, there are some potential drawbacks as well:

1. Application Readiness: The EA deadline is significantly earlier, which means you'll have less time to work on your application. This could be a downside if you've yet to finalize your essays or gather all necessary materials.

2. Senior Year Grades: If your senior year grades could boost your cumulative GPA, applying RD would allow for more of these grades to be included in your application.

3. SAT/ACT Scores: If you’re planning on retaking the SAT or ACT in the fall and think you can considerably improve your scores, it might be in your benefit to consider RD to ensure these scores are included in your application.
