Is it possible to defer my enrollment at Adelphi University?

I'm considering a gap year, and I'm wondering if Adelphi University allows students to defer their enrollment. Does anyone have experience or know the process? Any info would be much appreciated!

Yes, it is possible to defer your enrollment at Adelphi University. As a student accepted for admission, you have the option to defer your enrollment for up to one year. However, there are steps involved in this process.

First, you will need to send a written request to the Admissions Office. This request should include the reasons why you need to defer your enrollment. Bear in mind that the reasons should be convincing. Some applicable reasons could be to work, travel, complete a service project, or take care of a family situation.

And please note, if you're awarded any scholarships or financial aid, this might not automatically carry over into your gap year. The financial aid office typically reevaluates your aid package when you reenroll, so I would recommend reaching out to that office specifically to get all the facts before making a final decision.

Lastly, generally, it’s expected that students who defer their enrollment will not enroll in another higher education institution during their gap year. If you do plan to take college courses elsewhere during your gap year, you should clarify this with Adelphi's Admissions Office in your request to defer enrollment.

If you’re considering a gap year to develop a "spike" or take part in a Tier 1 or 2 extracurricular, this could be a very positive experience to bring up in college essays and interviews down the line. Just remember to make the most of this year in terms of personal and academic growth, and perhaps even professional development.
