Is it possible to defer admission at Carleton College?

I'm interested in Carleton College but might need to defer my admission for personal reasons. Does anyone know if Carleton allows deferrals, and if so, what the process looks like? Would love to hear your experiences or advice!

Yes, Carleton College does have a deferral policy. Admitted first-year and transfer students have the option to defer their admission for one year. It's not a complicated process, but there are a few steps you would need to follow:

First, note that if you're considering deferring your admission, you should still pay the enrollment deposit by the stated deadline to secure your spot.

Secondly, you will need to submit a written request to the Admissions Office. In this letter, you must detail the specific plans you have for your gap year. Carleton prefers that students engage in meaningful activities during their deferred year such as traveling, volunteering, working, or anything else that contributes to personal growth.

Keep in mind though that they do not allow students to enroll at another institution for degree-seeking coursework during this time. If you wish to take classes during your gap year, discuss your plans with the Admissions Office first.

Once your deferral is approved, the Admissions Office will provide details regarding your return to Carleton the following year. You won't need to undergo the application process again and your financial aid package will be reevaluated based on financial documents you'll need to submit for the next year.

Please be sure to check with Carleton's Admissions Office for any further details or updates to their policy.
