Should I apply regular decision to my backup school after ED1?

I applied ED1 to my top choice, but I'm nervous about not getting in. Should I apply regular decision to a backup school just in case? If anyone's been in this situation, I'd love some advice!

Definitely, it's a good strategy to apply regular decision to your backup schools while waiting for your Early Decision (ED) news. Though applying ED does boost your chances at some institutions, it's crucial to have a diverse application strategy. This is simply because college admissions and especially those for selective schools can sometimes be unpredictable.

Given that an ED agreement is binding, the only reason you can back out is if the financial aid package isn't sufficient, although this is a rare circumstance. Hence, it's wise to also proceed with your applications to other schools to ensure you're not left in a lurch if the ED decision doesn't go in your favor. Once you get an acceptance from your Early Decision school, you would have to withdraw all other applications.

By the way, it's completely normal to feel nervous regardless of where you apply. You want to approach this process proactively. To make things easier, try to get your regular decision applications ready around the same deadline as your ED application (typically early November). It's also beneficial to still put in the same effort in school work and maintaining your grades because colleges expect you to continue showing academic commitment throughout the senior year.

Remember, applying to colleges isn't solely about being admitted to your top choice school, but also about finding the place that will best suit your academic and personal growth during these crucial years. Best of luck with the process!
