What should I know about out-of-state regular decision acceptance rates at UNC?

I'm an out-of-state student considering taking my chances with UNC. Does anyone know how the regular decision acceptance rates for out-of-state students compare to in-state? Just trying to gauge my odds here.

Sure, I can provide some information on that! The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or UNC, is a public school. This means it has a commitment to serving students from its own state, and as a result, a majority of its student body is in-state. This can influence the acceptance rates for in-state vs. out-of-state students.

UNC's overall acceptance rate hovers around 17%. However, for out-of-state students, it's significantly more competitive. UNC has a cap on the number of out-of-state students who can comprise each first-year class—around 18%, which makes acceptance rates for these students lower.

Exact number fluctuates each year, but generally, the acceptance rate for out-of-state students is around 8-12%. Certainly a more challenging figure than their in-state counterparts, but by no means unattainable; hundreds of out-of-state students are admitted each year.

UNC is a fantastic school, renowned in areas such as business and journalism, not to mention their powerhouse basketball team. If you believe it's a good fit for you, it's definitely worth applying, but as with all college applications, make sure to have a balanced list of reach, target, and safety schools to ensure your success in gaining admission.

Good luck with your application process!
