Early Decision vs. Regular Decision: Mixed Applications?

I've been wondering if I can apply to one college with Early Decision and another with Regular Decision. Does applying Early Decision restrict my options in any way with the Regular Decision schools?

Yes, absolutely, you can apply to one college through Early Decision (ED) and others through Regular Decision (RD). However, there's an essential caveat you must keep in mind. If you get accepted by the school you applied to through ED, then you're obligated to attend that college, immediately withdraw all other applications, and not submit any more applications.

The ED agreement is binding, and the only general exception is if the financial aid provided doesn't meet your needs, then you can back out of the decision. Although, it's highly recommended to use the net price calculator beforehand to avoid such a situation.

Each year, there are unfortunate cases where students are revoked of their admission or face other consequences for not adhering to this agreement, so it's crucial that you are aware of your commitment when applying ED.

Regular Decision, on the other hand, provides you with the advantage of comparing acceptances and financial aid packages before making a choice. The deadline to declare your decision for RD applications is usually May 1st. Essentially, you have more flexibility with Regular Decision.

So to summarize, applying ED does not restrict you from applying to other schools as RD. But if you're accepted ED, you are required to withdraw all other applications and commit to that school. Be sure to communicate with your school counselors or admissions professionals (like at CollegeVine) to make sure you make an informed decision that aligns with your aspirations.
