What's the benefit of applying early action versus regular decision?

I'm debating between applying early action or regular decision to a couple of my top-choice schools. Can anyone explain the advantages of early action? Does it really make a difference in the acceptance rates or scholarship opportunities?

There are a few potential benefits to applying Early Action (EA) over Regular Decision (RD).

Firstly, one clear advantage is the earlier notification of admission decisions. In general, EA applicants receive their admissions decisions in December or January, compared to RD applicants who typically hear back in March or April. Knowing where you stand earlier in the process can relieve some stress and help you plan better for your future.

Speaking of scholarships, some institutions may award merit scholarships on a rolling basis, meaning that applying earlier could potentially increase your chances of receiving one. However, this isn't universally true, and the specifics vary a lot from school to school. You should research the practices of each institution you're interested in to understand whether applying early would increase your chances of scholarship money.

It's important to note that while the Early Action process can have its pros, it isn't ideal for everyone. You need to be certain that your application is as strong as possible - completing it in haste for an earlier deadline may not be beneficial if it means compromising the quality of your application materials.

Remember to consider your own readiness to apply, the strength of your application at the earlier deadline, and any specific policies or considerations at the schools you're interested in. With those factors in mind, you'll be able to make an informed decision about the EA vs. RD question.
