Understanding Rolling Admission vs Regular Decision

I've heard of rolling admission and regular decision, but I'm a little unclear about the differences. Can anyone explain which option might be better for someone who's still making up their mind?

Both rolling admissions and regular decision have their unique advantages, and which one works best really depends on your circumstances and preferences.

Rolling admissions is a process where colleges review applications as they come in and make decisions throughout the admission cycle. This style of admission can be beneficial if you apply early in the cycle, as you can potentially get an admission decision quickly. This can help reduce stress and provide more time to plan for college meaning making housing arrangements, exploring financial aid options, etc.

However, depending on when you apply, your preferred major or housing options may be filled up. Colleges with rolling admissions often have large application windows, but they do fill their slots as they go. So, if you're not ready to commit or still exploring options, this may not be the best choice.

Regular decision, contrasts with this by having a set deadline for all applications. All applications submitted by this deadline are reviewed together, and decisions are sent out all at once, usually in the spring. Because everyone is reviewed at the same time, you are not at a disadvantage if you apply closer to the deadline.

Regular decision allows you a bit more time to perfect your application and consider your college choices. You can also apply to multiple schools and then make a decision once you hear back from them all. Furthermore, since offers are usually sent out in the spring, you typically have until May 1st (National Decision Day) to make your final choice. It gives you plenty of time if you're uncertain about where you want to go.

So, if you are still exploring options and are unsure about your college choice, regular decision might be a better choice. But if you have a clear favorite that offers rolling admissions, applying early could get you a decision sooner. Remember, each college may use these processes a little differently, so always check the specific procedures and dates for each college you're interested in.
