What's the difference between QuestBridge Match and Regular Decision?

I'm trying to understand the differences between QuestBridge's National College Match and applying via Regular Decision. Are there benefits to picking one over the other, and how does it affect financial aid or admissions chances?

The QuestBridge National College Match is a program designed for high-achieving, low-income students. It is a college and scholarship application process that is separate from Regular Decision.

One of the significant differences is that the QuestBridge Match is binding. This means that when a student selects and ranks the colleges they wish to apply to through this program, and if they are matched with any of them, they are committed to attend that institution, given that they receive a full scholarship. Being matched with their top school is undoubtedly beneficial, but the binding nature of it also means that students need to think carefully before ranking their choices.

In contrast, Regular Decision is non-binding. This gives students the flexibility to apply to multiple colleges and, if admitted, to consider all their options, including financial aid packages, before deciding where to enroll.

Another significant difference lies in the financial aid offer. QuestBridge Match recipients are guaranteed full scholarships that cover tuition, room, and board, making college affordable for students coming from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. This scholarship doesn't require student loans or parental contribution. Regular Decision applicants, meanwhile, will be evaluated for financial aid according to a school's standard process. While most colleges meet 100% demonstrated need, those packages may include loans or work-study components.

Overall, QuestBridge Scholarships can be highly coveted, and understandably so, due to the full scholarship. However, the competition is fierce, and the decision is binding. While applying via Regular Decision may not result in the same level of scholarship, it can provide more flexibility in terms of college options and decision-making. It's not about one being better than the other, but more about which route aligns with a student's circumstances, preferences, and needs.
