Regents and college admissions?

Hello! I live in New York, and we have this thing called the Regents tests where we take standardized tests for certain courses. How do colleges consider these scores, if at all, in the admissions process? Thanks for the help!

Hello! The New York State Regents exams are indeed specific to New York and serve as a standardized assessment for certain high school courses. While they are part of your high school graduation requirements, they typically don't hold significant weight outside of New York state which means they don't really play a role in college admissions.

When colleges consider your application, they tend to give more importance to other factors such as your GPA, standardized test scores (e.g., SAT or ACT), extracurricular activities, and essays. That said, having strong Regents scores may be considered as a positive aspect of your academic profile, but it won't be the primary deciding factor in most cases.

If you are applying to colleges within New York state, they will likely be more familiar with the Regents exams and may consider them in conjunction with your GPA and course rigor. It's important to have a well-rounded application overall, and even though Regents scores may not be high on the list of factors for all colleges, don't overlook these exams as they are still part of your high school experience and graduation requirements.

In the end, it's always a good idea to check with individual colleges to see how they consider Regents scores or other specific standardized exams in their admission process. Generally, Regents scores are less critical for admissions decisions, but you should still strive to do well on them as part of your overall academic achievement.
