Early action, early decision, or regular decision: How do they differ?

I'm confused about the differences between early action, early decision, and regular decision. How do these options impact my college applications, and which one should I choose if I want to maximize my chances at my dream schools?

Early Action (EA) generally has a deadline in November, and you'll hear back around December (could be earlier or later depending on the college). Applying EA just means you're applying and receiving your decision earlier, but it's non-binding, meaning you aren't required to attend if admitted. This option can provide the relief of knowing your admissions decision earlier without obliging you to make a commitment right away.

Early Decision (ED) deadlines are around the same time as EA, and decisions usually also come around December. However, ED is binding. If you're admitted, you're expected to enroll unless the financial aid package provided doesn't make it feasible. ED should only be used for a top-choice college where you're sure you'd like to attend regardless of financial outcomes. Applying ED can show strong interest in a school, which can slightly boost admissions chances, on average resulting in a 1.6x or a 60% increase in acceptance rate. However, this commitment needs to be considered carefully because of its binding nature.

Regular Decision (RD) is the traditional process, with deadlines typically in January. Decisions usually arrive around March or April. RD is non-binding; like EA, you'll have until the universal response date, May 1st, to make your decision.
