What's the difference between regular decision and early action at Miami University?

I'm trying to decide whether to apply regular decision or early action to Miami University. What are the major differences between these two options? Any pros and cons I should be aware of?

Applying Early Action and Regular Decision to Miami University essentially differ in three main areas: application deadlines, decision notification, and binding commitment.

1. Application Deadlines: Early Action at Miami University has an earlier application deadline, typically November 1st, while the Regular Decision deadline is usually February 1st. Applying early can give you a head start on planning for college because you get your admissions decision sooner.

2. Decision Notification: If you apply Early Action, you usually receive your decision by the middle of December. For Regular Decision, Miami University typically sends out notification letters by late March.

3. Binding Commitment: One of the major differences between Early Action and other early application processes like Early Decision is the binding factor. Early Action is non-binding, which means you are not required to attend if you are accepted. This gives you the opportunity to apply to other colleges and compare financial aid packages before making your final decision by the May 1st deposit deadline. On the other hand, Regular Decision is also non-binding.

As for pros and cons, one advantage of applying Early Action is that you get your admission decision sooner which can alleviate some stress. Also, it shows demonstrated interest which can be a factor in admissions at some schools, although Miami University doesn't explicitly state they consider this.

One potential downside of Early Action could be that it might rush your application process since the deadline is earlier, so you'll need to have all your application materials, like your essay and recommendations, ready sooner. If you feel that additional time would significantly improve your application (for instance, first semester senior grades), Regular Decision may be the way to go.

Remember, whether you choose to apply Early Action or Regular Decision, it's important that you submit the strongest application possible!
