What should I expect with an online interview?

I've got an online interview with Trinity College coming up. How is it different from in-person interviews, and are there any specific things I should prepare for or expect from the online format?

Congrats on securing an interview with Trinity College! Online interviews can be quite similar to in-person ones in terms of content, but there are a few unique aspects you'll want to consider.

First, prep your tech. Ensure your internet connection is strong, your webcam and audio are working, and that you've downloaded any necessary software. It's a good idea to do a test run before the actual interview so you can solve any potential problems in advance.

Second, environment matters. Choose a quiet, well-lit location where you won't be interrupted. Position your camera sensibly - typically, it's best if it's at eye level. This allows you to look directly at the camera and 'make eye contact' with your interviewer.

Third, maintain professionalism. Just because you're not in the same room as your interviewer doesn't mean you can slack off on professional attire. Dress as you would for an in-person interview - yes, even the bottom half that won't be visible!

Finally, prepare as you would for an in-person meeting. Research the college, brainstorm insightful questions, and practice answering common interview queries. You should be prepared to discuss why you're interested in Trinity College specifically and what you can contribute to their community.

As for the interview itself, some have found that online interviews can feel less personal, potentially making the conversation feel somewhat stilted. To counteract this, be sure to still use body language to express enthusiasm and attentiveness, such as nodding and smiling. Be mindful of potential lag or connection issues - pause briefly after the interviewer finishes speaking to ensure they're done before you start your response.

Remember, the overall goal - to show you're interested, knowledgeable, and a good fit - remains the same, regardless of the format. Good luck!
