Do interviews really matter for certain colleges?

I'm trying to figure out which colleges place a big emphasis on interviews during the admissions process. How important are they, and should I be prioritizing schools that offer interviews? Any examples would be super helpful!

Interviews can play a role in the admissions process, but their importance varies by school. Many colleges view them as a chance for applicants to add context to their application or to learn more about the school from an alum or current student. However, even at colleges that offer interviews, they are often just one small piece of the application review process and not having one will not disadvantage you.

For example, Harvard encourages all applicants to interview but states that not having an interview will not be held against an applicant. MIT considers interviews as part of the holistic admission process, while UPenn treats them as informational and to showcase interest.

Interviews might be less influential at schools with large applicant pools simply due to the practicality of arranging them, but if a school offers you an interview, it's generally a good idea to take it. Even if the interview is not heavily weighted in the admissions decision, it's an opportunity to learn more about the school and perhaps include additional insight in your application or follow-up thank you note.

Keep in mind that even if a school doesn't offer formal interviews, there are other ways to demonstrate your interest and fit with the school's culture and values – attending info sessions, reaching out to current students or faculty, participating in open days, and, of course, reflecting your genuine interest in your essays.
