Should I Do the Optional Interview for Colleges?

I'm applying to several colleges that offer optional interviews, and I'm wondering if I should do them. Do they really make a difference, or can they backfire if I come across as nervous? Any experiences or advice would be appreciated!

In college admissions, every opportunity you get to present your candidature better typically offers a chance for the admission committee to know you beyond your application. If a school offers optional interviews, it's usually in your best interest to take them.

While it's true that a poor interview can negatively affect your application, consider that interviewers are trained to understand that high school students may not have much experience with interviews and may be reasonably nervous. They're not necessarily expecting you to be completely at ease either. Also, they don't typically have a huge bearing on your admissions decision unless they indicate a red flag.

If you prepare for the interview by practicing common interview questions, researching the college, and reflecting your own experiences and future goals, your nerves should ideally be at ease. You should also prepare questions to ask the interviewer, which can demonstrate your interest in the school and provide you with valuable information.

That said, there are some schools, like Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins, that do not offer interviews. Make sure to thoroughly check the details on each college's website to understand their specific requirements and offerings. Do remember to stay true to yourself during the interview - authenticity goes a long way.

In summary, while interviews rarely make or break an application, they can add a personal note to your application, helping you stand out from the crowd of similarly qualified applicants. Don't let the fear of being nervous prevent you from showcasing your personality and drive to the admissions committee.
