What are some good gap year ideas after high school?

I'm graduating soon and thinking about a gap year to explore some interests and gain experience. Does anyone have creative or worthwhile gap year ideas that a high schooler like me can consider?

That's a worthwhile thoughtful decision you're considering. Gap years can provide enriching and profound experiences indeed, allowing individuals to explore various topics, arenas, and interests before diving into academia or the workforce.

1. Volunteer Abroad: Programs like Global Citizen Year and Projects Abroad provide opportunities to volunteer and make positive impacts on local communities in different countries. You could assist in areas like healthcare, child care, refugee aid, and more, all while exploring a different culture.

2. Internships: A gap year can be a great time to gain firsthand exposure to an industry of interest through an internship. Flip open a job listing website or check out LinkedIn and start seeking internship opportunities that align with your interests.

3. Travel: Broadening your horizons through travel can be an extremely rewarding gap year experience. Certain programs, like Where There Be Dragons or National Geographic student expeditions, even focus on experiential education and cultural immersion.

4. Research: If there's a subject or issue you're extremely passionate about, consider involving yourself with relevant research projects. This could happen in many forms: lab work, field studies, archives, and more.

5. Develop a Skill or Hobby: You could spend a year honing a particular skill, whether it be learning a language, mastering a musical instrument, or getting good at coding. You can also explore online courses on platforms like Coursera and Udemy.

6. Entrepreneurship: If you've got a business idea that you're passionate about, taking a gap year to give it a shot could be valuable. Even if the business fails, the experience learned could be invaluable!

Remember, it's more about the experience than the outcomes. A successful gap year is defined by how much you grew personally, academically, and professionally. Make sure to come up with a plan that includes your goals and what you hope to achieve during this time.
