What Makes a Good College Interview Question?

I've got some interviews lined up and am curious about what questions I should prepare for. What are some examples of good interview questions that colleges typically ask, and how should I answer them?

Great question! In a college interview, you're likely to encounter questions that span a few key areas: your academic interests, extracurricular activities, college and career goals, and your knowledge of the college you're applying to.

For academic interests, you may be asked to talk about your favorite subject in school and why it interests you. When responding, the key is to be specific and personal. Discuss not just the subject but a particular aspect of it that excites you and any related experiences you've had.

As for extracurricular activities, you might have to explain what you have learned from them and how they have shaped you. Instead of simply listing off activities, try to paint a picture of your involvement and what you've gained from it. For example, if you are part of the school’s Debate Club, you could discuss how it has improved your communication skills and ability to handle pressure.

When it comes to college and career goals, they might ask about why you're interested in a particular major or what career path you hope to follow. For this, relate it back to your personal experiences or passions. They love to see that you're driven by a personal motivation or goal rather than just "it sounds cool."

Lastly, you should have a solid understanding of the college to which you're applying. If asked why you want to attend this college, your response should be specific and highlight what sets this school apart in your eyes. For instance, instead of just saying that the college has a 'great engineering department', note specifics like innovative teaching methodologies, strong industry connections, specific professors whose work you admire, or unique courses.

Most importantly, be yourself during the interview. No need to share what you think they want to hear. Share your authentic thoughts and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. College interviewers are looking to get to know you better—your unique experiences, passions, and perspectives. So, as much as you prepare, remember that the intrinsic value lies in you, not rehearsed responses.
