What are the best gap year programs abroad?

I'm considering taking a gap year after high school and would love to explore programs outside of the U.S. Could anyone recommend some of the best gap year programs abroad that offer diverse experiences?

There are a ton of great gap year programs that offer opportunities to immerse oneself in a different culture, learn a new language, engage in volunteer work, or gain practical skills. I'll mention a few here that are highly regarded for the immersive experiences they provide.

1. Global Citizen Year: This is an 8-month program offering experiences in places like India, Senegal, Ecuador, or Brazil. Participants can dive into local communities and work in fields like education, public health, or environmental conservation.

2. Outward Bound: Known for their outdoor education programs, Outward Bound has international options that incorporate adventure and service learning in places like Costa Rica, and the Caribbean.

3. CIEE Gap Year Abroad: CIEE offers semester and year-long programs in many countries around the world. You could find yourself learning Spanish in Spain, teaching English in Italy, studying International Relations in Belgium, or taking part in many other valuable experiences.

4. Projects Abroad: Projects Abroad offers volunteering and internship opportunities across the globe in fields such as medicine, education, journalism, law and more.

5. Where There Be Dragons: They offer intimate, small group experiences that let you delve into a culture and understand its history, politics, religion, and ecology. Countries include Nepal, Guatemala, Senegal, India, and many more, with curriculum-focused programs and opportunities to stay with host families.

6. Gapforce: From Costa Rica to Australia to the African Savannah, Gapforce offers programs focused on adventure, conservation, and education, with opportunities such as green energy internships, teach English, or become a certified Survival Instructor.

7. Thinking Beyond Borders: TBB offers year-long programs that include multiple countries. These programs are service-based in focus, combining internships, cultural immersion, and independent research projects.

Take into consideration your interest areas, the kind of experience you want to have, and the locations you are most attracted to. Make sure to research each one deeply to find the right fit for you. Remember, these are just a few examples. There are many more programs out there, and you might find that a less well-known one may offer just the right kind of experience you're looking for! A gap year can be a great way to learn about yourself, the world, and even help clarify the academic direction you might want to pursue in college.
