What is the cost of gap year programs like?

I'm considering taking a gap year before college and exploring programs. However, I'm curious about how much gap year programs generally cost. Are there any affordable options or is it usually expensive to enroll in these programs?

The cost of gap year programs can vary tremendously, depending largely on what you want to do and where you want to go. Some organized programs can cost as much as $30,000 or more for a full year, while others might cost less than $10,000. However, keep in mind that these fees usually include accommodation, in-country support, and often meals, activities, and/or service projects.

For example, some service-oriented programs such as AmeriCorps actually provide a modest living stipend and a grant to use toward college tuition in exchange for your participation. On the other hand, some international travel or immersion programs can be much more expensive, particularly if they include language instruction, support services and pricey destinations.

There are also many low cost and even free opportunities out there, if you're willing to arrange much of the experience yourself. You could arrange your own volunteer work or internships, for example, or choose a less traditional gap year destination where living costs are lower.

And remember, you may be able to defray some of the cost of a gap year program through scholarships or fundraising. Some programs offer financial assistance, and there are also independent scholarships available specifically for gap year participants. Additionally, some individuals have been successful in crowdfunding their gap year experiences.

It's also worth bearing in mind that a gap year doesn't have to mean a full year—a shorter program or experience could also be a rewarding option, and potentially more affordable. Happy planning!
