Does skipping a college interview affect my chances?

I'm curious if not doing an interview will harm my chances of getting into a college. I've heard mixed things about whether they're important or not. Does anyone have any insights on this?

Skipping a college interview isn't likely to significantly harm your chances if interviews are designated as optional by the college. The primary purpose of an interview is for admission officers and alumni to get to know you better on a personal level and for you to demonstrate your interest in the college.

If the option for an interview arises, my advice would always be to take it if you can. It's an opportunity for you to ask questions, learn more about the school, and put a face to your application. Additionally, showcasing your interest and enthusiasm for the institution can be beneficial, regardless of how much weight interviews have in the admission process.

For example, Dartmouth College is one highly selective school that considers demonstrated interest, and interviews, if available, could represent a direct way of showing this. However, keep in mind that demonstrated interest is not a major factor in the admissions process.

Understandably though, some applicants might have a range of valid reasons for not pursuing an interview (e.g., severe discomfort with interviews, scheduling conflicts, etc.). Schools understand this, so if interviews are stated as optional, not taking one won't necessarily negatively impact your candidacy.

Just be sure to check each college's policies. If you're unsure, reach out to the admissions office and inquire about their stance on interviews. This way, you will have a clear idea about how your decision to opt-out of an interview might impact your application at various schools.
