Are interviews available for first-year applicants at Yale College?

I'm applying to Yale College as an undergraduate, and I'm curious about the interview process for first-year applicants. What can I expect, and how much of a role does it play in admissions? Any tips for preparation?

Yale College does offer interviews to undergraduate applicants, although they are not guaranteed for every student. Interviews are conducted by Yale alumni volunteers and take place generally from November through mid-February.

Interviews usually take on a conversational style where you'll be asked about your academic interests, experiences, and future goals. It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase your passion for Yale College and express how you plan to contribute to its community. The interview also serves as a means for you to gain an insider's perspective from the alumnus about their Yale experience.

Rest assured, interviews are noted in your application, but they are not a major determining factor. Yale states on their website that a great or lackluster interview will not outweigh the other, more substantial parts of your application, like academics, essays, and extracurricular involvement. So, while it's good to prepare, don't stress too much.

Preparation can include researching more about Yale College's curriculum, unique features, student life, and the specifics of the major you're interested in. Be ready to articulate why Yale stands out to you amongst other Ivy League or elite institutions. Notably, be prepared to share your own experiences and hobbies, especially focusing on your involvements that demonstrate passion and commitment.

Lastly, remember to enjoy the process. This is your opportunity to learn more about the school from someone who was once in your shoes. Coming out of the conversation with some new knowledge on Yale College is just as important as making a good impression. Good luck, and remember to be yourself!
