Suggestions for college alumni interview tips?

I've got a college interview coming up with an alumnus, and I'm unsure how it might be different from regular interviews. Does anyone have tips on how to approach interviews with college alumni specifically?

Engaging with an alumni interviewer can indeed be a different experience from interacting with a college admissions officer. Here's the good news: alumni are usually passionate about their alma mater and eager to connect with prospective students. They can offer valuable insights about student life and the university culture that other interviewees might not be able to share, which can be a great resource for you.

Now, onto tips to ace your alumni interview:

1. Research the University: Alums will be impressed if you've done your homework about their alma mater. Know the academic programs or courses you're interested in, any key aspects of the campus culture or unique traditions, and what it is about the university that draws you. You can discuss these points during your interview to show your genuine interest.

2. Ask Insightful Questions: Like any interview, you'll want to ask questions. Since your interviewer is an alum, take the opportunity to inquire about their personal experiences. You could ask things like, "What do you wish you had known as a freshman?” or “What opportunities did you avail of during your time at the university that significantly shaped your experience?"

3. Treat it Like a Conversation: Instead of treating it like a Q & A, think of your alumni interview as a conversation. Remember that your interviewer has been in your shoes before and be more relaxed. Don't forget to let your personality shine through!

4. Be Respectful and Professional: Even though it's a conversation, treat it as a professional interaction. Dress appropriately, be on time, and thank the interviewer, both at the end of the interview and with a follow-up thank-you note.

5. Showcase Your Achievements: While it's important to dialogue, remember this is an opportunity for the interviewer to learn about you. Make sure to discuss your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, any leadership roles you held, and how they have shaped who you are today. Remember, though, to bring these accomplishments out naturally within the conversation.

6. Prepare for Common Questions: There are certain questions that frequently get asked in college interviews such as, "Why do you want to attend this college?" or "What can you contribute to our community?" Prepare concise and thoughtful responses to such questions.

Don't be afraid to let your passion and excitement for the university shine through! Alumni often resonate with applicants who display genuine interest and enthusiasm for their alma mater. Good luck with your interview!
