Calculator for the ACT?

Hello everyone! I'm taking the ACT soon, and I've heard varying opinions on whether or not you need a calculator. Is it necessary to bring a calculator for the math portion of the exam, and if so, does it have to be a specific type?

Hello! A calculator can be quite helpful during the math portion of the ACT, as it can save you time on calculations and increase your overall accuracy. While it's not absolutely necessary to have a calculator, I would highly recommend bringing one to make the exam experience more manageable.

As for the type of calculator, the ACT has specific guidelines on what's allowed. Most graphing, scientific, and four-function calculators are permitted, but there are a few restrictions. For example, you cannot use any calculator with computer algebra system (CAS) capabilities, and calculators with built-in or downloaded computer algebra system functionality (like the TI-89 or TI-Nspire CAS) are also prohibited. Additionally, devices like cell phones, tablets, and laptops that have calculator functionality are not allowed.

To be safe, double-check the ACT calculator policy before your test day here to avoid any issues. A popular calculator choice among students is the TI-84 Plus, but any graphing or scientific calculator that adheres to these guidelines should work well.

Good luck on your ACT exam!
