What topics should I talk about in a college interview?

I sometimes blank out during interviews, so it would help to know what topics are good to discuss in a college interview. Any advice on balancing personal stories with academic interests?

In a college interview, your aim should be to demonstrate the depth of your interest in that school, as well as your character, passions, and academic commitment. Here's a list of topics you might consider preparing to talk about:

1. Specific Program/College Interest: Be ready to explain why you're interested in this particular college. This might include academic programs, specific courses, professors whose work you admire, or opportunities for research, etc. You would want to show that you have done your homework about the school.

2. Academic Interests: Discuss some scholarly topics that excite you. You can talk about a favorite class or subject in high school, a research project you completed, an industry or profession you’d like to explore in college, or a book that provoked your thinking.

3. Extracurricular Activities & Leadership Roles: Discuss what you did outside of the classroom and most importantly, what you learned from these experiences. Focusing on your most important few extracurriculars helps demonstrate depth of involvement and reflect on the skills gained.

4. Personal Stories and Experiences: Tell them about the challenges you've overcome, interesting experiences you’ve had, your background and how it shapes your worldview. These will help the interviewer know you in a more personal level.

5. What Sets You Apart: Each applicant is unique in their way. Discuss what differentiates you from other students, such as a unique hobby or an impactful personal experience.

6. Career Goals: It is helpful to have a sense of your future career goals, but don’t worry if you haven’t figured everything out. Colleges know high school students frequently change their career aspirations.

7. Questions for the Interviewer: While this might seem counter-intuitive, asking a couple thoughtful questions to your interviewer can provide you an opportunity to connect on a deeper level and show your earnest interest in the school.

Remember, a college interview is as much about you getting to know the college as it is about the college getting to know you, so use this opportunity to also ask questions and learn more about the school. Good luck!
