How to Dress for a University Interview?

I'm a high school junior getting ready for my first university interviews and I'm not sure what to wear. How formal do these interviews typically get? Do I need a suit, or is business casual okay? Any tips would be appreciated!

Hello! University interviews generally have a business casual dress code. This means you're not required to wear a full suit, but you should still aim to appear professional and well-groomed.

For male-identifying students, khaki or dress slacks with a button-down shirt and dress shoes can be sufficient. A jacket, such as a sport or suit jacket can add a touch of formality, but it's not a requirement. If you choose to wear a tie, keep it conservative, avoiding excessively bright colors or bold patterns.

Female-identifying students have a little more variety in business casual attire. This could include a blouse with a skirt or slacks, a dress, or a nice top with a cardigan or blazer. Closed-toe pumps or flats can be suitable footwear.

Keep in mind that your attire should also be dependent on the culture and climate of the university. If you're interviewing for a university in a warmer climate, for instance, lighter fabrics and colors may be appropriate. Similarly, some universities may have a more informal culture, possibly located in more creative or innovative areas might allow for more individual expression in attire.

Remember, the goal is to appear professional and respectful, not necessarily formal. It's always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. That being said, remember that your interview attire is only a small part of your overall impression. Focus on your preparations for the interview, ensuring that you're ready to discuss your achievements, goals, and why you'd make a good fit at the university. Best of luck with your interviews!
