Princeton University Alumni Interviews - What to Expect?

I have an alumni interview with Princeton coming up and I'm curious about what to expect. What kinds of questions are typically asked, and how can I best prepare to make a good impression? Any insights from recent applicants?

An alumni interview is a great opportunity to share about yourself in a more personal way than on paper and get to know more about Princeton from someone who has studied there. The interviews are 30-45 minute informal conversations, where you can discuss the things that are important to you and also ask questions to someone who attended Princeton.

Common topics include: explaining why you're interested in Princeton specifically, discussing your academic interests and how you plan on pursuing them at Princeton, talking about your involvement in extracurricular activities, and articulating your long-term goals. Questions related to these topics could include "What courses or programs at Princeton interest you the most and why?" or "Describe an extracurricular activity that has been particularly meaningful to you and how you hope to continue this interest at Princeton."

It’s also not uncommon for interviewers to ask about a favorite book, a challenge you’ve overcome, or your heroes or role models. However, every interview is unique, so it's possible you may get asked questions that are entirely specific to your application.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

- Review your Princeton application, in particular your essays. Make sure to remember your points and be prepared to add detail to them.

- Review Princeton's programs and offerings, so you know about what resources are available that align with your interests.

- Think about some questions you could ask the alum about their time at Princeton, which will demonstrate further interest in the university and help you learn more about it.

Remember, the interview is as much about you getting to know the university as it is about them getting to know you. There's no need to stress too much about it. Just make sure to present yourself authentically, and you'll do great!
