What are some gap year working abroad options?

I'm looking into taking a gap year to work overseas and was wondering what types of jobs are popular for high school grads. Any cool experiences or programs that you guys recommend?

That's a great idea! Taking a gap year can provide a lot of unique and formative experiences. Here are a few options:

1. Au Pair: This is a popular choice for those who enjoy working with kids. As an au pair, you essentially become part of a family abroad, helping them care for their children and sometimes helping with household tasks. In return, you receive a stipend, room, and board. This is a great way to become immersed in a new culture.

2. English Teacher: English teaching opportunities are available in many countries for native speakers, especially in Asia. Programs like JET in Japan or EPIK in South Korea provide the chance for you to teach English while immersing yourself in a new culture and language.

3. Work and Travel Program: Many countries offer a "work and travel" visa which allows you to legally work in the country for up to a year. Australia and New Zealand are popular destinations for this. Work can be anything: farm work, retail, hospitality, etc.

4. Outdoor Adventure Organizations: If you love the outdoors, you might consider working with a backpacking or adventure company. These groups often offer training prior to employment and it’s a chance to experience the great outdoors while gaining some leadership skills.

5. Volunteering: Nonprofits and NGOs around the world are often in need of volunteers. While you may not receive any payment, you often have access to room and board in exchange for your work, and it can provide a really rewarding experience.

It's always critical to research these programs thoroughly to ensure they're reputable and to understand what's covered and what you might need to fund yourself. Additionally, keep in mind that COVID-19 might impact international travel and work opportunities, so remember to stay informed and flexible with your plans!
