I'm applying to UPenn as an undergraduate and I'm a bit confused about the interview process. Is it required to request an interview, or is it optional? I'm trying to figure out how best to manage my applications.
The first thing to note about interviews, or Alumni Conversations, at the University of Pennsylvania is they are not evaluative and do not influence admissions decisions. Rather, they are just a conversation between you and a UPenn alumni volunteer. This is an opportunity for you to learn a little more about UPenn through hearing the experience of a proud alum, not anything to be nervous about.
Now, to answer your question, applicants may not request an Alumni Conversation. These conversations are solely based on alumni availability. Not being contacted to connect with an alum has no bearing on your application and is not a reflection of how UPenn has viewed your application so far! There are only so many alumni volunteers, so not receiving an offer for this conversation likely means there just isn't enough availability in your area to interview everyone.
If you would like to opt out of participating in an Alumni Conversation, you may indicate that directly on your application to Penn. If you choose to opt-out, please know that it won't affect your application negatively. This is an opportunity for you, so it's up to you if you want to take it.
Good luck with your application!
