Interview tips for general university admissions

I have some upcoming interviews for various universities and I'm feeling anxious. What should I know going into these interviews? Any general advice on how to conduct myself or common questions that might be asked?

Initial preparation can make a significant difference in how comfortable you feel going into college interviews.

First, it's important to research each college where you'll have an interview. Familiarize yourself with its mission statement, courses of study, traditions, and campus culture. This knowledge will not only help you in answering questions but will also help you to ask insightful questions of your own.

Secondly, practice makes perfect. Try to simulate the interview environment with a friend or family member. Have them ask you potential questions such as:

- Why are you interested in attending this college?

- What can you contribute to our campus community?

- Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge and how you overcame it.

- What is your favorite book and why?

- Who is a person you admire and why?

Remember that many interview questions are designed to learn more about you as a person. The interviewer wants to see your passion and your drive, and that you are a good fit for their college culture.

When it comes to your demeanor and how to conduct yourself during the interview:

- Dress appropriately. Even if the interview is virtual, dressing professionally will help you feel more confident and focused.

- Strive to be articulate, thoughtful, and respectful. It's fine to take a moment to think about a question before answering.

- Be honest. If you embellish or try to "pad" your answers, it likely won't come across well.

- Show enthusiasm. You’re hoping to spend four years of your life at this institution, so let them know you're excited about that!

- Remember to use good eye contact and have a firm handshake.

With enough preparation, this process can be an opportunity to express yourself, showcase your qualifications, and demonstrate your motivation.
