Can I change my university choice before the visa interview?

I'm planning to study in the U.S. and have a student visa interview coming up. Is it possible to change my university selection before the interview, or should I stick with my original choice?

The U.S. Student Visa process permits changes of university choice, but they do require certain steps. Here's some information to guide you:

The university you will attend should match the one listed on your I-20 or DS-2019 form. This form is issued by the university you plan to attend, and it confirms your admittance and your major among other details. To modify your university selection, you will need to get a new I-20 or DS-2019 from the new university you plan to attend.

Now, consider the visa you are applying for. If you applied for an F-1 visa, your I-20 should be from the school you want to and are going to, attend. If you've received a DS-2019 for a J-1 visa, that should be from the university you've chosen. Changing schools means getting a new I-20 or DS-2019.

There's one more thing to keep in mind: the time frame. The process of getting a new I-20 or DS-2019 can take some time, as it involves acceptance from the new school, going through SEVIS fee payment, and verifying your financial ability to afford your education abroad. Make sure that you have enough time to initiate and complete this process before your visa interview.

Finally, if you have already paid your SEVIS fee for the original school, you might need to pay it again for the new university. It's always recommended to consult with both schools' international student services offices to get the most accurate and current information.

Be prepared to explain any changes during your visa interview. It's important to assure the consular officer conducting the interview that you have a valid reason for the change and that you're serious about your studies. As long as your paperwork is in order, changing schools ahead of your visa interview is permissible.

This can be a complicated process though, so it's recommended that you speak with an advisor who's experienced in U.S. student visa matters if you consider this change.
