University interview phone call tips?

I have a university interview coming up, but it's going to be over the phone. How should I prepare differently compared to an in-person interview? Any tips to make sure I come across well?

Phone interviews require a slightly different approach than in-person interviews, and it's great that you're thinking in this direction. Here are some things to consider:

1. Choose a Quiet Location: This is paramount. Select a space where there are minimal background noises and the chances of interruption are less.

2. Keep Your Documents Handy: Have a copy of your application and any other important documents available. This can include anything you discussed in your application such as your resume, transcript, or even notes about key points you'd like to mention.

3. Stand Up: This may sound strange, but standing up during your call can help project your voice better, making you sound more confident and engaged.

4. Practice: Just like in-person interviews, the key to a successful phone interview is practice. You can ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview. Record this practice session if you can; it will help you to notice areas where you can improve.

5. Speak Clearly: Without visual clues, all emphasis is on your voice. Speak at a moderate pace, articulate clearly, and adjust your volume to ensure the interviewer can understand you easily.

6. Listen Closely: With visual cues missing during a telephone conversation, it can sometimes be challenging to assess when the interviewer has finished their question. Listen intently and wait for the interviewer to complete their part before you begin speaking.

7. Prepare Questions: In the end, if given the chance, ask a few thoughtful questions. This shows your commitment and interest in the university, alongside demonstrating that you've done your homework.

Remember, treat the phone interview with as much seriousness as you would an in-person one. Dress up professionally too. It might sound odd, but dressing formally can put you in the right mindset for the conversation. Good luck!
