How to Prepare for Duke University's Admission Interview?

I'm prepping for my Duke University admission interview and would love some advice. What kind of questions should I expect, and any tips on how I can stand out? I'm low-key stressing about making a good impression.

Sure thing! First, keep in mind that any interview, including Duke's, should be viewed as an extended conversation rather than a formal interrogation. The university is interested in learning more about you, your interests, and what you might add to its community. At the same time, it is also an excellent opportunity for you to get even more information about the school from someone who has firsthand experience.

Typically, the interview would touch on topics like:

1. Why you’re interested in Duke — Be as specific as possible. Discuss certain classes, clubs or extracurricular activities, majors, or programs that interest you. You might want to mention the unique aspects of Duke's culture or community that have drawn you to the school.

2. Your academic interests — You should be prepared to discuss what you enjoy studying, why, and any future career plans. Don't shy away from discussing subjects or projects you are really passionate about.

3. Your extracurricular activities — be ready to talk about what activities (clubs, sports, volunteering, etc.) you're involved in, your roles in these activities, why you chose them, and what you've gained from your involvement.

4. Current events or books you’ve enjoyed — Be prepared to discuss recent books you've read or current events that interest you.

Regarding standing out, authenticity is key. You want to make a connection by sharing personal experiences or values that align with Duke's ideals. For instance, if community service is important to you, you'll want to share about your volunteer engagement, considering Duke is big on service. Also, you could discuss how you could contribute to the Duke community through your unique cultural, geographical, or academic perspective.

Lastly, come prepared with thoughtful questions about Duke. This shows genuine interest in the University, and also helps you get more insight into the campus experience. These can be simple questions like "What was the most memorable class you took?", "What's one thing you'd change about Duke?” or "How would you describe the undergraduate culture?"

Remember, interviews should be a two-way street. While your interviewer is getting to know you, you should also be trying to learn more about Duke from them. It's your chance to show them who you really are and the unique qualities that you would bring to Duke's campus. Good luck! You got this.
