Tips for university alumni interviewing?

I've got an interview scheduled with an alum from one of my top college choices. How can I prepare for this and make sure I leave a good impression? Do these interviews really matter in the admissions process?

The conversation with an alumni interviewer has the potential to positively influence your application, as they may submit a report on their impressions of you back to the admissions office, and this can become part of your application file.

Here are a few tips to prepare for your meeting:

1. Understand the purpose. The goal of the interview is to give the school a better understanding of you in a manner that's beyond what they see on papers. It's also your chance to show genuine interest and demonstrate how you would fit into the institution's community.

2. Research the college. Know the basics like its location, student body size, academic programs, and some notable traditions or facts. If you're interviewing for a specific program, know some specifics about that program.

3. Be ready to talk about yourself. The interviewer will likely want to get to know you better—your background, motivations, academic interests, achievements, extracurriculars, and post-college goals.

4. Have a list of questions. Ask insightful, detailed questions that show you have taken the time to research the institution. For example, you can ask about the interviewer's personal experiences, what they loved most about the school, or even about specific programs you're interested in. Avoid asking questions that are easily accessible on the school's website.

5. Dress appropriately. This means professional or business casual attire.

6. Practice. Think about potential questions and practice your responses. It's important to sound confident and articulate, not robotic or rehearsed.

7. Be professional. Arrive early, make eye contact, listen attentively, and show respect in your body language.

8. Follow up. Send a thank-you note after the interview to express your appreciation.

Regarding their importance, alumni interviews generally don't make or break an admission decision. Nonetheless, it can enhance your application if you make a strong positive impression. Think of it as just one part of a holistic application process; your academic records, essays, and extracurricular activities are ultimately more significant.
