Are interviews common for transfer students at universities?

I'm thinking about transferring from my current school and was wondering if interviews are a part of the transfer application process at most universities. Would it be a good idea to prepare for one just in case?

The interview process for transfer students can vary significantly depending on the college or university to which you're applying. As transfer admissions can be more inconsistent than first-year admissions, there aren't as many set standards or practices across all schools.

For a number of universities, particularly larger state schools, interviews are not part of the transfer admission process due to the large applicant pool. This is in stark contrast to smaller private schools or liberal arts colleges, which may request an interview either on campus or with alumni as a way to better understand your reasons for transferring and to gauge your fit with their institution.

Keep in mind, at most institutions, the interview (if offered) is likely not a required part of the transfer application process. However, if a school does offer you the opportunity to interview, it's definitely beneficial to take advantage of that opportunity. It can be an excellent way to express your interest in the school and to share more about your personal experiences and goals.

To make sure you're prepared, check out each individual school's transfer admission page on their website, as this will often indicate whether or not they offer interviews to transfer applicants. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to the admissions office with any questions. They can give you tailored advice regarding interviews as well as other parts of their transfer application process.

As a rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to prepare for a potential interview, especially if you're applying to smaller, private institutions. You can never be too prepared, and practicing your responses to common interview questions will help you feel more comfortable and confident, whether or not you end up needing those skills for an interview.

In preparation, consider key points about why you want to transfer, what makes the school a good fit for you, and how you intend to contribute to the community. Understanding and effectively articulating these points can make a great impression, not just in an interview, but also in your transfer application essays and other interactions with admissions.
