Tips for a university interview

I have my first university interview soon and would love some insights on how to prepare. What kind of questions should I anticipate, and what are the best ways to present myself? Any special dos and don'ts to keep in mind?

Universities often use interviews to help assess the fit between candidates and their institutions, so it's an excellent opportunity to showcase your interests, achievements and goals, and learn more about the school. As you prepare, here are a few things to consider:

Research: Before anything else, conduct a thorough research on the university. Familiarize yourself with the school's culture, values, programs that interest you and anything else that makes the college unique. It might be helpful to follow the university's social media accounts to get a feel for the campus culture.

Anticipate Common Questions: While every interview is different, there are some questions that interviewers often ask:

1. Why are you interested in our college?

2. What do you plan to major in and why?

3. What activities are you involved in at your current school?

4. Can you describe a book, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time?

5. How do you handle failure? Can you give an example?

Prepare for Behavioral Questions: Behavior-based questions let interviewers see how you've handled certain situations in the past, which can give them insight into how you might perform in the future. Some examples include, "Tell me about a time you faced a significant challenge and how you handled it?" or, "Describe a leadership role you've held and how it had an impact."

Practice Answering Questions: Practice answering some of these questions with a trusted friend, teacher or family member. Be sure to share examples that highlight your skills, achievements and character. Remember, keep your answers concise and on point.

Dress Appropriately: Dress neatly and professionally—think business casual but comfortable. Your attire should be respectful, but not too flashy.

Be Yourself: Authenticity is key in interviews. You want the interviewer to get a real sense of who you are, so be genuine.

Ask Questions: An interview isn't just for the school to find out about you—it's your opportunity to learn about them. Prepare a couple of thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer about the school or programs you're interested in. This shows that you've done your research, you're interested in the school, and are proactive.

And lastly, relax. It's normal to be a bit nervous, but remember, the interview is just one part of the whole admissions process, and everyone you speak to is there to help you find your best college fit. It's just as important that the school is the right environment for you as it is for you to impress them. Good luck!
