What Are the Options for Gap Year Work in the USA?

I'm planning a gap year and was curious about what kind of work opportunities exist within the USA for students who just graduated high school. Would love to hear about experiences and how to find good options!

There are plenty of work opportunities to explore during a gap year, depending on your interests and skills. Here are some popular options:

1. Service Year: Organizations like AmeriCorps, City Year, or Teach for America offer incredible opportunities to serve communities all around the country. These programs often provide a living stipend and an education grant that you can use toward your future college expenses.

2. Internships: This could be a great way to gain experience in a field you're interested in. Platforms like Appily, LinkedIn, or Indeed could help you find internship opportunities specially designed for high school graduates or gap year students.

3. Seasonal Jobs: Industries such as tourism, agriculture or hospitality often have jobs that align with the summer or winter season. Think being a camp counselor, farm worker, or working at a ski resort.

4. Nannying or Babysitting: Many families look for live-in nannies or regular babysitters, and pay well for these roles.

5. Retail Work: Jobs in shops or supermarkets not only pay wages but also often offer employee discounts.

6. Restaurants or Fast Food: Waitressing, bussing tables, hosting, or even kitchen work in restaurants could offer good pay and flexible hours, especially in busy city areas. Fast food chains are often hiring and also offer flexible hours.

Every role will offer different experiences. In general, it's wise to look for something that aligns with your career goals, if possible. If you're thinking about a career in education, try to find a job or volunteer opportunity working with kids. If you're interested in hospitality, look for jobs in restaurants or hotels.

Please note that for a lot of these roles you need to be at least 18 years old and in some states, employment laws still limit the hours that 17-year-olds, even recent high school graduates, can work. Research these kinds of laws in your state before applying for jobs.

In terms of discovering these opportunities, the Internet is your friend - use job search platforms, visit the careers page of industry leaders, or use social networking to find opportunities. It's also a good idea to tap into your personal network - friends, family, coaches, or teachers might know people looking to hire. And don't underestimate the power of a cold email or phone call - reaching out directly to organizations or people you want to work with could land you a great position! Good luck with your gap year planning.
