Advice on Gap Year Work in the UK?

What do I need to know about finding work in the UK during a gap year? I'm interested in potentially moving there and working as part of my year off before college. Any tips or advice?

First, bear in mind that getting a job in the UK will require you to have a work visa. In the UK, visa applications fall under the points-based immigration system. You'll need to apply for a tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) visa if you're aged 18 to 30 and you're from certain eligible countries.

Certain job fields in the UK hire a lot of short-term workers, so these could be good areas to consider. For instance, the hospitality industry often hires temporary staff, especially in cities like London, Edinburgh, and Manchester, or in tourist areas. Retail may also offer part-time job opportunities.

You might also consider farming or fruit picking jobs which often have short-term contracts and may even provide accommodation. There are also temp agencies available where you can sign up and be placed in appropriate roles.

Gumtree and Indeed are popular websites for job hunting in the UK. You should also, of course, update your LinkedIn profile. It's also advisable to research companies in the UK in your field of interest and visit their career pages periodically for job postings.

And while you're working, consider taking in the local culture and traveling around the UK. It's a great place to explore history and nature.

One other important point to remember: the UK tax year starts on 6 April and ends on 5 April the following year. If you're employed in the UK, tax and National Insurance contributions will likely be automatically deducted from your pay. If your total earnings for the tax year are under your Allowance, which as of 2022-23 is £12,570, you may be able to claim a tax refund at the end of the tax year.

Finally, working abroad can be a wonderful opportunity to grow personally, professionally, and academically. However, remember to take care of your mental health during your gap year. Moving to a new country can be stressful and you'll want to ensure you're caring for your emotional health too. Be patient with yourself, invest time in making new friends, and enjoy this unique adventure!
