Planning a gap year for humanitarian work: Tips?

I'm really interested in taking a gap year to do some humanitarian work after I graduate. Does anyone have tips on organizations to consider or how to best prepare for this kind of experience?

It's admirable that you're interested in dedicating your time to humanitarian work. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. Start by narrowing down your interests: What kind of humanitarian work are you interested in? This could be anything from teaching in underserved communities, working in health clinics in rural areas, supporting refugees or combating climate change. Your interests will help guide your selection of the right organization.

2. Research organizations: Once you have a clear interest, you can identify potential organizations to work with. Some well-regarded international organizations that offer gap year programs include the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and WorldTeach. These organizations offer a variety of programs in different sectors like education, health, environment, etc. If you're interested in a more domestically-focused program, organizations like City Year or Habitat for Humanity might be of interest.

3. Prepare your application: Many organizations require an application process which may involve an interview, background check, and possibly a medical examination. Show your passion, dedication, and willingness to learn and adapt. Highlight any relevant experience, skills or languages you may have.

4. Consider your health and safety: Research the safety of the location you'll be working in and what kind of health precautions you might need to take, such as vaccinations.

5. Plan your finances: Some gap year programs provide stipends or cover living expenses, while others may require you to fund them yourself. Consider fundraising or saving up ahead of time to ensure you can afford your gap year.

6. Equip yourself with necessary skills: Depending upon the type of work you will be doing, you might need certain skills or qualifications. For instance, you may want to consider getting a TEFL certificate if you plan to teach English abroad.

7. Reflect and Set Goals: Consider how this experience fits into your larger educational and career goals. What do you hope to gain from this experience?

Remember, taking a gap year for humanitarian work can be an incredibly transformative experience. You have the chance to impact the lives of people and communities in need while also growing personally and professionally. It's great that you're considering this path, and I hope you find this information helpful. Good luck!
