Working on a boat for a gap year: How to start?

I think it would be cool to work on a boat during my gap year. Does anyone have experience with this? What kind of jobs should I be looking for and what qualifications might I need?

One option you might consider is working on a cruise ship, as there are numerous job roles available, such as serving as part of the waitstaff, working in guest services, or even acting as a tour guide for on-shore excursions. These positions often don't require specialized experience, though customer service backgrounds are typically beneficial.

Alternatively, if you're interested in more technical roles, you might look into positions as a deckhand or in the engine room. These jobs typically require some prior experience or certification, such as the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) basics, which are internationally recognized.

Another option could be working on a charter yacht or private boat, as they often hire crews for cooking, cleaning, and sailing.

Bear in mind that many of these positions will also require you to pass a medical examination, as being at sea can be physically demanding and access to medical help may be limited.

Lastly, I suggest networking and reaching out to those already in the industry or visiting local marinas to seek job openings. This can give you a better understanding of what employers are looking for, which can guide your preparation for these roles. Remember, safety training is key when working on the sea, so be prepared to invest time and energy into learning the ropes, both literally and figuratively!
