What should I expect in an interview with the University of Rochester?

I've got an interview scheduled with the University of Rochester and I'm kinda nervous. If anyone's been through it, what kind of questions should I prepare for, and how important is the interview compared to the rest of the application?

First of all, don't worry too much! An interview is a fantastic opportunity for you to express your interest in the University of Rochester and allow the interviewer to get to know you beyond your application.

The questions in an interview can vary widely, but generally, you can expect some common ones. Often, they'll ask why you're interested in studying at the University of Rochester and which aspects of the university’s curriculum and community you find most appealing. Other typical prompts may include discussing your academic interests, talking about your extracurricular activities, or showcasing how you've overcome challenges. It's also common to be asked about your future plans or what you plan to contribute to the campus community.

That being said, the best way to prepare is to reflect on your experiences, your motivations for applying, how you've contributed to your high school or local community, and your future academic or career goals.

Although the University of Rochester doesn't explicitly state the weightage of interviews in its admissions process, an interview can usually enhance your application by illustrating your personality, passions, and commitment more vividly than a written application can.

Remember that the interview is also a conversation, not just a one-sided interrogation, so feel free to ask questions about the school, student life, and the interviewer's own experience if they are an alum. It’s a great way to show your genuine interest in the university.

Above all, remember that the interviewer is looking to learn more about you, so be honest, be yourself, and let your passion and enthusiasm shine through. You've got this! Break a leg!
