How does rolling admission work?

I'm thinking about applying to some schools and heard they have rolling admission. Can someone explain how it works and if applying earlier really gives you a better chance of acceptance?

The concept behind rolling admission is fairly straightforward. Essentially, the admission committees of these colleges assess applications as they arrive, starting from when their application window opens until it is officially closed.

Rather than having hard cutoff dates for decision notification like with Early Action or Regular Decision admission processes, they continue to review applications and render decisions continually throughout the admission cycle. Applicants generally receive an admission decision within a couple of weeks after their application file is complete and under review, although timelines can vary.

One of the main benefits of this system is that you have flexibility with when you submit your application. However, it's generally advantageous to apply earlier rather than later in the cycle, as spots in the incoming class (and possibly institutional aid) may be filled as time goes on. So, while it doesn't guarantee acceptance, submitting your application earlier could potentially give you a slight advantage.

However, do make sure to keep an eye out for priority deadlines. For instance, for students wanting to be considered for honors & scholars programs and competitive scholarships, the priority admission deadline is typically earlier in November or December. These priority applications are likely to receive their decisions first.

Lastly, as the process is ongoing, it's crucial to provide all required information promptly, such as transcripts and test scores, if needed. It's also good to periodically check your application status to ensure everything needed has been received.
