Understanding the college admissions process changes

It seems like the college admissions process is constantly changing. What should I be aware of as I prepare my applications for next year? Any specific changes I should look out for or prepare for while applying?

Indeed, the world of college admissions is quite dynamic and undergoes changes almost every year. As you prepare your applications for the upcoming cycle, here are some concrete changes to be aware of:

1. Standardized Testing Policies: The biggest phenomenon we saw over the recent years was colleges becoming test-optional due to COVID-19. However, many colleges have decided to revert back to requiring standardized test scores, while others have decided to remain test-optional. Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Purdue University, UT Austin, and Caltech, for instance, will be requiring all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score, as of the 2024-2025 application cycle. Others, such as Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Chicago, remain test-optional. Checking the testing policies of your desired institutions is crucial.

2. Digital SAT: Another major change is that SAT is now completely digital since the spring of 2024. The digital SAT has two math and two reading/writing section, with specific time limits for each as well.

3. ACT Changes: ACT is set to make some drastic changes to its exam as well in 2025. The test will become shorter, and interestingly, the science section will be optional. Some colleges may require this optional section, but this isn't clarified yet.

4. Affirmative Action: Affirmative Action was struck down by the Supreme Court in June 2023. Now, colleges may not practice race-conscious admissions, but they can consider how circumstances associated with race may have impacted a student individually.

5. Realignment of College Sports: College sports also went through realignment after the 2023-2024 academic year. For example, the University of Oregon, UCLA, Washington, and USC joined Big 10 conference while Stanford, Southern Methodist University, and Cal joined Atlantic Coast Conference.

Remember, these changes could influence various aspects of your application, and also have indirect effects. It's always best to remain updated and proactive in learning more about the evolution of the admissions process. Colleges' own websites are great primary sources to get the most accurate and updated information from. Good luck with your applications!
