College process checklist essentials?

What are the essential items I should include in my college process checklist? I'm trying to make sure I stay organized and don't miss any important steps, but there's so much to think about. What do you have on yours?

Creating a college application process checklist is a great way to stay organized. Here are some important items you might want to add:

1. Research Colleges: Identify which schools align with your academic, career, and personal goals while considering factors such as size, location, majors, campus culture, financial aid, admission requirements, etc.

2. Standardized Tests: Plan for taking the SAT or ACT (if required by the colleges you're interested in). Since, as of 2024, the SAT is fully digital, make sure you're prepared for the new format. Be aware of the registration deadlines and test dates.

3. Create a Timeline: Draft a timeline including deadlines for college applications, financial aid, scholarships, and deadlines for any standardized test. Be aware that there are different application deadlines (Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision), and each has its own timeline.

4. Letters of Recommendation: Identify the teachers, counselors, or community members who know you well and would be willing to write a letter of recommendation. It's best to ask them well in advance of the deadlines.

5. Application Essays: Brainstorm and draft your college essays. Try to avoid cliche topics and focus on unique experiences that highlight your personality and values. Each college might require different essays, so keeping track of these is key.

6. Financial Aid: Understand the financial aid process. If eligible, fill out FAFSA as soon as possible and utilize the net price calculator on each school's website to get an estimate of the cost. Understand the terms 'need-blind' and 'meets full demonstrated need' if applicable to your schools. Pay attention to scholarship opportunities as well.

7. College Visits/Interviews: If feasible, plan to visit the schools you're interested in. If on-campus visits aren’t possible, consider virtual campus tours. If offered and feasible, capitalize on interview opportunities.

8. Application Proofreading: Always proofread your applications before submission. Check for any typos or errors that could be easily avoided.

9. Submission: Be sure to submit your application on time. It might be beneficial to aim for a few days before the deadline just in case you face any technical issues.

10. Check Application Status: After submitting, most schools provide a way to verify that they received your application materials.

Remember, everyone's checklist will look a little different based on their own needs and the schools they're applying to. Good luck in your college application journey!
