Schools strive to build diverse and multifaceted classes, and that means they're evaluating a lot more than just academic credentials. They're also looking for qualities such as leadership potential, dedication, creativity, and perseverance among others.

The issue of fairness often comes up in relation to standardized test scores and their role in admissions decisions. Some critics point out that these tests can favor students who have access to high-quality test prep or who come from better-funded school districts. That's one reason many colleges have chosen to become test-optional or test-blind, meaning they either de-emphasize or don't consider test scores at all.

Socioeconomic or geographical factors can also play a role, as colleges often wish to increase diversity on their campuses. For example, rural students, first-generation applicants, or those from underrepresented groups may be given some consideration.

Remember that early decision, early action, and early admission programs definitely have their advantages, so not being able to commit to a certain college or university because of financial considerations could also influence the process.
