How do parents play a role in the college admissions process?

I've heard that parents can really influence the college admissions process. For those who've been through it, how involved should parents be, and what's the best way for them to support their kids?

Parents certainly play a critical role in the college admissions process. However, their role is more of guidance and support, as opposed to taking the lead. Some ways parents can be involved and helpful are:

1. Financial Planning: They can help figure out the financial aspect of college, from calculating college costs and filling out FAFSA forms, to understanding and comparing financial aid packages from various schools.

2. Setting Timelines: Parents can assist with managing deadlines for applications, financial aid, scholarships, enrollment, etc. This keeps the whole process organized and helps avoid any missed opportunities due to late submissions.

3. Research: They can also help in researching colleges, course offerings, and major programs. Having an extra pair of eyes never hurts, and they may spot information that the student might miss.

4. Emotional Support: The college admissions process can be stressful, and parents can provide emotional support and encouragement, reminding their child that it's perfectly ok if things don’t go as planned.

5. Visiting Colleges: Parents can accompany their child on college visits, helping them assess if the school seems like a good fit, not just academically, but also in terms of campus culture and location.

6. Providing Feedback: They can review the student's college essays and provide constructive criticism. However, they shouldn't write or over-edit the essays for the student.

With all these roles though, it's important for parents to strike a balance and ensure they're not overshadowing their child's autonomy. Students should be at the center of the admissions process since they are the ones who will ultimately attend college.
