What are the stages of the college application process?

I'm a junior and I'm starting to think about college applications. Could someone outline the main stages of this process? I'm trying to get organized and don't want to miss any important deadlines or steps.

The general stages of the college application process can be broken down as follows:

1. Self-reflection and research: First, spend some time reflecting on your academic interests, career goals, social preferences, and other factors that may shape your college experience. Use this information to guide your college search process. Research potential schools online and if possible, attend college fairs or virtual events, or visit campuses.

2. Standardized Tests: Begin studying for, and schedule your SAT or ACT tests. Keep in mind, some schools have gone test-optional, so check the testing requirements for each school on your list.

3. School List and Deadlines: Create a list of schools to apply to - typically this includes a mix of "safety", "match", and "reach" schools. Note down application deadlines, ideally in a spreadsheet or planner. There are key types of deadlines: Early Decision (ED), Early Action (EA), Regular Decision (RD), and sometimes Rolling Admissions.

4. College Application Form: Fill out your college application form(s). Common, Coalition, and the Universal College application forms are used by many schools, but others may have their own unique forms.

5. Essay Writing: Write your personal statement and supplemental essays for each school. This is your chance to express your personality, ambitions, challenges, and why that specific school is a good fit for you.

6. Letters of Recommendation: Request letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or other individuals who can speak to your character, commitment, and capabilities. Give them plenty of notice and provide any relevant information to help tailor the recommendation.

7. Sending Transcripts and Scores: Arrange for your high school to send your transcripts to the colleges on your list. Also, submit your SAT/ACT, AP, or other test scores if necessary and if the colleges require them.

8. Financial Aid and Scholarships: Fill out the FAFSA as soon after October 1st as possible, to qualify for financial aid. Simultaneously, research and apply for any scholarships you may be eligible for.

9. Submission: Submit your applications! This is usually done online. Be sure to check over and proofread everything carefully before clicking 'submit'.

10. Waiting and Decisions: After submitting, there will be a period of waiting for decisions from colleges. Some may also invite you for an interview.

11. Review Decisions and Respond: Once you receive your admission decisions, decide which school you'd like to attend. Send in your acceptance, along with any deposit required, before the agreed deadline (often May 1st).

Remember, this process takes time and there may be variations depending on the region or specific institutions. Stay organized, plan ahead and don't be afraid to ask for help if you're unsure about anything. Good luck!
