How can I create a checklist for the college process?

I'm trying to stay organized as I navigate the college application process. Does anyone have tips for creating a checklist that covers all the major steps? What should I definitely include to make sure I don't miss anything?

Creating a comprehensive checklist for the college application process can be key to staying organized and on top of every step. Here's one potential way to structure your checklist:

Summer before Senior year:

1. Create a finalized list of colleges to apply to.

2. Research admission requirements for each college on your list.

3. Start working on your personal statement and supplemental essays.

4. Request letters of recommendation if you haven't already.

5. Plan out standardized test dates (if applicable and considering policies might have changed due to COVID-19).

Fall of Senior year:

1. Ensure you have all materials in order for early applications if you plan on doing Early Decision or Early Action.

2. Finalize essays and have them proofread.

3. Fill out the Common App and other applications as necessary.

4. Ensure your high school is sending transcripts on time.

5. Submit FAFSA as early as possible after October 1st to maximize opportunities for financial aid.

6. Apply to local and national scholarships

Winter of Senior year:

1. Keep track of Regular Decision due dates and submit all materials.

2. Check if all materials have been received by each college.

3. Continue searching and applying for scholarships.

4. Maintain regular focus on your current classes - Senior year grades still matter!

Spring of Senior year:

1. Wait for admission decisions.

2. Once received, compare offers, and make your final decision.

3. Reach out to colleges to decline offers you're not accepting.

4. Follow instructions for accepting your chosen college admission offer which is typically done by May 1st.

Throughout the process:

- Keep everything organized. Have a separate folder (physical or digital) for each college and keep track of all documentation, dates, and communications.

- Maintain a calendar with all important due dates and set reminders.

- Regularly check email and college portals for updates or additional requests.

The above list is a general guideline and may vary based on your unique circumstances. The main aim is to provide a timeline to follow while applying to colleges. Don't forget to keep a balance of reaching for your goal colleges along with applying to match and safety schools. Best of luck!
