How does the College of the Ozarks application process work?

I'm considering applying to the College of the Ozarks and am wondering what their application process is like. Are there any tips for standing out? I'm hoping to prepare as well as possible. Thanks!

Answer: The College of the Ozarks has a somewhat unique application process compared to many colleges, and they are often referred to as "Hard Work U" - this is because all full-time students work 15 hours a week at an on-campus job. The college admissions team highly values work ethic, self-reliance and values in its applicants.

You'll start by filling out the Common Application and supplement specific to the College of the Ozarks. The college is test-optional, so students can choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores. However, applicants who do not submit test scores must submit high school transcripts showing an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0 and must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at their current secondary school. If your GPA doesn't meet this criterion, sending in test scores can be beneficial.

The College of the Ozarks has a financial need requirement: students whose families are capable of providing a significant portion or all of the cost of education will not likely be successful candidates for admission. You will need to fill out the FAFSA to have your financial need assessed. The College of the Ozarks is one of the few colleges that does not charge tuition, with scholarships and the student work program enabling students to graduate debt-free.

The college does require a Christian character reference. This should come from a non-family member who can speak to your spiritual commitment and character, such as a pastor, youth leader, or a teacher at a religious school (if applicable).

Lastly, the College of Ozarks requires an on-campus interview for all applicants. This is your time to shine and make a positive impression. Be prepared to discuss your work experiences, your commitment to Christian values, why you want to attend a work college, and what you hope to contribute to the campus community.

Your application, financial need, work ethic, and character reference all play crucial roles in standing out to the College of the Ozarks admissions committee. Demonstrating a strong work ethic, discussing experiences where you've exhibited maturity and self-reliance, and expressing your commitment to Christian values will help you shine in your application and interview.
