What questions are asked during college advising?

I'm meeting with my high school counselor next week for college advising. What kind of questions should I be prepared to ask or answer during this meeting? I'm hoping to make the most out of our session!

During a college advising session, the counselor will likely ask you about your interests, long-term goals, academic performance, and extracurricular activities. Here are a few potential questions that you could be asked:

1. Do you have ideas about what you want to study in college?

2. What are your academic strengths and interests?

3. Do you prefer large or small schools? Urban or rural locations?

4. What extracurriculars are you involved in?

5. What's important to you in a college? (E.g. the prestige of the school, specific academic programs, athletics, etc.)

6. Have you thought about where you might want to apply?

As you want to make the most of the session, it's good to prepare some questions for your counselor. Here are a few examples:

1. Can you help me understand how my coursework aligns with the rigor of colleges I'm interested in?

2. Do you have any recommendations for schools given my interests and goals?

3. Can you explain how I should fill out my college applications, especially the Common App/Coalition App/University-Specific Apps?

4. Can you go over my college essay topic and give some feedback?

5. How can I make myself more attractive to colleges?

6. What should my timeline be for admissions tests, applications, financial aid, etc.?

Remember, the goal of this meeting is to help you plan for your future and make informed decisions about your college applications.
